About Christian Petrulio

Dr. Christian Petrulio is a double board certified, fellowship trained hand surgeon with board certification in both General Surgery and Hand Surgery. He graduated with honors from Harvard University after which he did research in the fields of wildlife conservation with the Cheetah Conservation Fund in Namibia, Africa and then virology research at New York University School of Medicine, from where he went on to receive his Doctorate in medicine.

His surgical training was done at Columbia University Medical Center’s New York-Presbyterian Hospital in General Surgery, during which time he did a fellowship in Surgical Oncology focusing his research on vaccine development for the treatment of melanoma. From there he went on to do his Hand and Microsurgery fellowship at the University of Louisville’s Kleinert-Kutz Institute, where he participated in the second and third hand transplants ever performed in the United States.

Upon completion of his surgical training, he joined a Hand Surgery practice in Austin, Texas for five years before joining Southcoast Physicians Group in 2014.

His areas of expertise include minimally invasive treatments for nerve compression, including carpal tunnel syndrome and ulnar nerve compression. Other commonly treated problems include thumb arthritis, trigger fingers, Dupuytrens contractures, and all varieties of hand and wrist trauma including bone, tendon and nerve injuries.

  • After being hospitalized at St. Luke's, and needing to be seen by a hand specialist, the doctor fit me into his schedule two days after Christmas. Great bedside manner and explained everything reasonably and answered all of my questions. He was very helpful.

Why does Southcoast publish survey ratings online?
Southcoast is dedicated to providing patients and consumers with helpful information about the quality of our patients’ experiences. Star ratings published on our physician biography pages are based on actual responses from patients of that particular physician to patient satisfaction surveys that are distributed and processed by a national patient satisfaction survey vendor.

Who receives the survey?
Our vendor sends surveys via SMS or email to all patients seen in our outpatient physician practices who have a valid smart phone number or email address on file with Southcoast Health. Surveys are sent to patients within a few days of their appointment.

How is the Patient Satisfaction Star Rating Calculated?
Star ratings are calculated using an average of all survey responses to each of three questions: Courtesy and Respect of Staff, Provider Overall Rating, and  Willingness to Recommend Provider’s Office.  The star rating displayed on our physicians’ main biography page represents the average of the three measures for that particular physician.
